Andy Carvin’s New PBS Blog: Learning Now
At a recent Boston Media Makers meeting, Andy Carvin let it spill that he was going to be authoring a blog for PBS about learning, technology, and culture called “Learning Now.” He wanted to call it “Appetite for Construction” but I guess that was a little too edgy for PBS. The site should go live in mid-April. Andy will explore how the educational establishment grapples with new social media phenomena like Wikipedia, videobloggging, and MySpace. As someone who works with technology in public schools, I think a blog like this, with the kind of national exposure PBS will bring, is long overdue. It is time for people to start talking about the good, the bad, and the ugly of the way that the education world integrates, or gets swamped by, the new technology currents swirling around it. So, whatever your “Appetite for Construction,” I hope you are ready for “Learning Now.”

Tips And Tricks For An Interview
I’m going to be doing some interviews next week with a camera operator and editor. This is an upgrade from my usual routine of shooting everything by myself and pointing the camera back and forth and so I went to the yahoo videoblogging list to ask for advice.

Just Think: Media Literacy for Youth

Rene of Luxomedia and Irene McGee of No One’s Listening recently collaborated on an interview with Elana Rosen of Just Think. Just think is an organization with three missions: to teach youth to deconstruct media messages, to analyze media representations of social issues such as racism, violence, and roll models, and to produce original and meaningful messages of their own. Students often work collaboratively to produce videos such as in this short, “Souls.”
Elana herself has an impressive resume; she has had 20 years experience in media and education, is the Executive Director, Co-Founder, and Board Chair of Just Think, and is also one of the 13 founding board members of the first National media education membership organization, Alliance for a Media Literate America (AMLA).
Just Think teaches in-school and after-school classes to youth in two locations in the San Francisco Bay area, and offers media literacy curricula to purchase online. For the vlog world, this will mean that we have that many more media literate minds out there, and I hope to see future vlogs as a result! Please be sure to check out their website, then pop on over to visit Luxomedia and No One’s Listening.

The Scoop on Blip.tv

Blip.tv is one of the hottest services out there for videobloggers, (we use it for all our WATM videos) and they just keep getting better and better. Who could complain about free, reliable video hosting that is easy on all fronts? I asked the folks at Blip, a few questions concerning the new features at Blip, the new things to look forward to, and also about the sustainability/possible charges of the service. They really seem to know what they are doing, but the best part is that they have their ears turned to the vlogosphere to find out exactly we need, so they can provide it.
“Our focus is very simple: we want to make video blogging easy. Everything we do is done with this in mind.”

Vlog Europe Interview Remix #1

Sadly, wearethemedia.com did not have the funds to fly me to Vlog Europe 2005. Happily, I was able to conduct an
interview with one of the conference participants, Ryanne Hodson, via my Vlog Europe Interview Remix Kit and the Vlog Europe Press Pool. XOLO.TV is also a great source of conference footage. If you post a Vlog Europe remix, using the kit, or other sources, we’d love to hear about it. Meanwhile, I guess there’s always VE ‘06 to dream about.

Parlez-vous Frances? Visit Podemus!
Here at WATM, we are always striving to be more international. In an attempt to further the pursuit of this goal, I came across a site that our French vlogging friends may find helpful. At Podemus.com, francophone vloggers have the opportunity to attack personal media publishing from a number of different angles using their native language. Because my French does not extend very far past “Bonjour”, I contacted Podemus co-founder and developer Mayel de Borniol in hopes that he could explain things to me in English. de Borniol created Podemus along with Oliver Vignot and Bertrand Lenotre, designer and the first French podcaster, respectively. Mayel informed me that “Podemus is, first of all, a podcast and videoblog directory, but also a search engine, aggregator (each visitor can create his personal playlist), and has an online audio/video player.” Basically, individuals have the opportunity to visit, create a free account, and get to work on making their own personal media in an environment that is geared towards French speakers. It’s exciting to think that the vlogging community is growing to include so many different cultures. It’s a true testament to the universal appeal of the medium. Mayel has high hopes for his product. He told me that his goal is “to make it possible for every person to express himself [through] independant journalism, art / music, or more personal things.” Good luck, Mayel! And whether you speak French, English, or any other language, stop by and see what Podemus has to offer.
