TILT: Teaching Teachers How to Teach Tech

As a teacher interested in technology I have been interested in how teachers use technology in the classroom in order to make learning more fun and relevant to the tech-savvy kids they teach. Indeed, it is ironic that kids can often teach teachers a thing or two about technology, and teachers are already so bogged down with work that they simply can’t find time to teach themselves how to use the technology they should be teaching. But some teachers are beginning to take the bull by the horns and teach teachers how to use and teach technology.

Danny Maas is the visionary behind TILT (Teachers Improving Learning with Technology), a site created for teachers by teachers that focuses on using technology in the classroom to enhance learning. So far this site has covered such topics as using digital pictures in the classroom, using the internet to enhance writing, educational robotics, and my favorite, student-created science lab video reports. He has also included links on his main page that walks teachers through the basics of vlogging, including info on RSS feeds and how to watch videoblogs in iTunes.

Check out this site and tell all of your teacher friends about it…after all, they should be the media, too!

Phil Hamilton Hits WATM

Whether he’s singing ballads about coffee cake, making collaborative music videos with our own Josh Leo, or proclaiming his true feelings about homework, Phil Hamilton will make you smile. This Massachusetts based vlogger came on the scene in March of 2005, and has since consistently produced a broad range of quality video. One post may find Phil and his friends discussing the world’s fate at the hands of lobstermen, while another might feature him interacting with his family on a drive home. He mixes it up, and keeps things interesting. His ability to draw you in no matter what the subject is evident upon the first click of your mouse. Phil’s infectious laugh, his sense of humor, and his obvious coin-spinning talents will keep you coming back for more. Hopefully his antics will inspire more young people to spread the word about vlog revolution. Check him out. You won’t be disappointed. Vlog on, Phil, and good luck with that homework.

SpeedVlogging!

Raymond of DLTQ recently challenged Max of Maximilian’s Vlog to the world’s first speedvlogging competition. For those of you unfamiliar with the rules of this game, they are as follows: Make a vlog (which may or may not include rules or a theme) in SEVEN minutes (including encoding and exporting time) and post it to your blog. Your opponent makes her or his own vlog simultaneously and posts it as well. At the end of the seven minutes you will each view your apponent’s vlog, at which time you will then have to decide which post is better and who wins. This can go on indefinately, so make sure you packed a lunch.

Max has put the challenge out there for all of those attending Vlogeurope to participate in this supremely challenging event. Here at We Are The Media, we would like to challenge all of you to a SpeedVlog–and may the best vlogger win!

Bre of I Make Things and Josh of Josh Leo will be participating in the first WATM SpeedVlog competition. Stay tuned for more details on this World-Wide Video Smackdown event!

Review: Drinking With Bob

Many vloggers bounce around from topic to topic, style to style, genre to genre. Not Bob Thompson. Bob does one thing on his vlog. He rants. His targets are the powerful: politicians, media, corporatons, and celebrities. His tone is one of utter rage, punctuated with sarcastic mockery. And while I often find holes in his logic, or just plain disagree with him, I keep checking in to see what is sending Bob over the edge this week. I think it’s because I can learn something about America when I watch him. I am sure Bob represents a lot of peoples’ views. Truth be told, I’m nodding my head along with him a lot of the time. And I am drawn to the passion that emanates from his fury contorted face. Plus, I was the guy who taught him how to videoblog, so I have a kind of sentimental interest in how his vlog is progressing. The funny thing is, in person, when he isn’t on camera or on stage, Bob is a relaxed and mellow guy. Vlogs are a way for a regular Joe or Jane to have a voice, and Bob is making his voice heard loud and clear. And if you don’t like what Bob has to say, make your own vlog and rant and rage right back at him.
Disclaimer: Bob uses foul language.

Katrina Covered By and For the People

Right now there is a tremendous amount of news coverage on the Hurricane Katrina disaster, as well there should be; this disaster is inarguably the worst tragedy to strike American soil for at least the last hundred years and has also inarguably been tragically and fatally mishandled on virtually every level by the richest country in the world.

This being said, there is some incredible news coverage coming out, particularly in the vlogosphere, that truly represents the people hardest hit by this event. Missing Kitten TV has again shown to be a fantastic site that not only covers the news but represents the people involved. Please watch the incredibly powerful coverage of Jefferson Parish president Aaron Broussard. Also check out “‘Oops!’ is not an answer,” a letter written by an Army Reserves Engineer, and “Indifference is a weapon of mass distruction” by Dennis Kucinich, to get a sense of how the active participants in our government feel about what is really going on.

This is really only a snapshot of all of the great coverage going on, so please check out Missing Kitten’s complete site and stay tuned for another update of great news coverage.

It’s time to get video cameras in the hands of those inside the Astrodome along with some damn radios so the people can at least hear something about their own fate.

Big Easy Southern Comfort

Aaron Flores has created some incredible video-calidescopes over at The Voiz (how does he do that??!). The most recent one, Big Easy Southern Comfort , focuses on the Hurricane Katrina disaster. It is both sensitive and thought provoking and is a MUST to view.

BlogHer Flava

Watch Movie
There has been a lot of talk about the recent BlogHer event in San Francisco, but I think this video by Renegade Rene over at Luxomedia has created the most informative and flavorful video yet on the conference. In this clip you will see a variety of women talking about their experiences video blogging and what keeps them hooked. There is also a lively discussion over why more women are not represented as “Top” video bloggers and what we can do to change the status quo.

This is also a call to women to go get yourself a camera and find your voice in the media!

Please Note: This video contains some graphic language.

Swordfight: Friday Dialup Challenge

Play Movie

Phillip Clark over at Swordfight has just posted his first “dialup challenge” entitled, “Frankie vs The Ninja.” For those of you who don’t know about the dialup challenge, Phillip invented this idea on the Yahoo Videoblogging Group to get “as many people as possible to post very short vlog entries that are suitable for consumption over a 56k modem.” Check out this first video and then get your own bad self over to make one of your own!
