We All Speak Football, a place for vloggers during the World Cup
If you are going to be in Berlin from June 9 - July 9, then you must drop by the “weallspeakfootball” apartment. The apartment sponsored by Coca Cola is a blogger, podcasting, vlogger crashpad in the heart of Berlin, Germany. Prizes are gonna be given out, there’s drinks, food, fun and if you sign up for the application even a place to stay. What does it have to do with football (soccer for Americans)? Well, it is based around this year’s World Cup in Germany, however I’m not sure how much football talk there will be. If you want to join in on the fun along with the hosts, pro German blogger Lyssa from Lyssa’s Lounge, Anil from Mobuzztv.com and GabeB and I from XOLO.TV, just go to the website and fill out the application form. There are a few WK tickets to be had as well.
Kickoff!

United Vloggers of Europe
Alexx from iFranz.tv sent an e-mail to a number of vloggers asking to take part in his idea, “United Vlogger”. The idea was to have a number of vloggers in different countries read the news headlines at exactly the same time, Saturday 6 May @ 10:00. The videos would then be collected an edited and a week later the video would be posted together. Well It worked and it was real fun to do. The contributors were Cyrille, Alexx, Karina, Burkhard and myself (Gabe Mac). And as Karina says in the end, “Onto the next vlogger.” So it’s up to the rest to pick up the ball and keep going. Great Idea Alexx!

Vlogging the Taboo: Mortality
As Videoblogging Week 2006 rolls on, I find myself re-entering the vlogging world after a break with an unexpected exuberance for everything video. I have been watching posts of my old favorites, and I have also been discovering new gems here and there. One vlogger has captured my attention with his approach to this annual event. I have watched Dave Huth of 90 Seconds of Dave many times previous, but I don’t think I have ever been so moved as I have been by how he has chosen to spotlight Vlogging Week.
The title of his entries, “People I Know: Mortality”, only tells part of the story. Yes, his videos are about death, but they are about so much more. They are about an integral portion of the human experience. In our culture death is taboo. People don’t like to talk about it, and if they must they do so in hushed tones as if it were listening and might come for a visit. That is unfortunate. As a counselor, I believe that it is extremely important for us to discuss all aspects of life. Death is a natural part of living. If anything, it helps us to see just how precious our relationships are. Yes, death is hard to discuss and uncomfortable to think about, but Dave shines a strong light of dignity on those he spotlights. The feelings that he creates through images of elderly parents who have lost their son, and a young mother holding her child help to further personalize his posts. Everyone experiences death in a different way. Dave opens the viewer’s eyes to the humanity of our mortality, and I applaud him for his originality. Check out his first two entires here (Day 1) and here (Day 2).

We The Media Panel in Germany at the Digital Lifestyle Day 2006

This post is a little late, but I thought it was good to show what people are talking about. Last month I attended the Digital Lifestyle Day 2006 as a speaker for the “We The Media” panel along with Dan Gillmor (A-List Blogger), Loic Le Meur (Vice President Six-Apart France) and Anina (the fashion blogger). I talked about video blogging at the end of the panel which starts at around 50 min. into the video. I feel that Dan, Luc and Anina have some very interesting things to say, and felt this should be shared. One thing is sure is that we are on the brink of a revolution in both social revolution and art collaboration.
There are some more conferences I am attending in the coming months, and I’ll be posting my thoughts on what comes out of them. One thing I heard at the DLD, apparently web 3.0 is upon us. I guess I need to upgrade my system again.

Boston Media Makers

At at the Berkman Center for Internet and Society meetings we go around the room and give our names. I like getting to know who is at the meetings.
Dave Winer recently wrote, What is an unconference?
Winer says:
“The sum of the expertise of the people in the audience is greater than the sum of expertise of the people on stage.”
I like to embrace that thought at the new Boston Media Makers meetings. We go around the room and talk about what we are working on. I bring up pages on a big screen and show videos that people either have made or ones they’ve seen. This introduction time takes over and hour and is a wonderful thing to be a part of.
Here’s a new blog for the Boston Media Makers that has my meeting notes and a few videos.
First there was the unconference, now there’s the unmeeting.

Vloggers Meetup in Amsterdam
Thanks to Ron Langdon and Mike Schaap, the Dutch vloggers finally got together two weeks ago in the Balie in Amsterdam. We’ve been making this meetup a bi-wrrkly occurance. Last week, Michael, Daniel Salber (from Fireant Mac) and myself were there discussing topics around vlogging and life in genreal. Probably the best discussion came to the Quantom Physics applied to video blogging. Very fun stuff.
If you are in Amsterdam or want to join in two weeks we will be meeting again in the Balie Cafe in Amsterdam. Here is a post from the first get together. We’ve been using the Vlog Europe message board to communicate the times and meeting place. Hope to see you Dutch vloggers there in 2 weeks.

Halloween Videoblog Festival

The season is right, the ghouls and goblins are making mischief, and so are video bloggers. Zadi has started compiling a nice collection of all the spooky, eery, or Halloween-themed videos from the vlogosphere in a Halloween Videoblog Festival. So put on a costume, grab a bag of candy and go trick-or-treating from vlog to vlog.

Node 101 NYC: Grand Opening

Node 101 NYC is celebrating its grand opening this weekend at 247 Broome Street, 1st Floor, between Ludlow and Orchard Streets. It will host free workshops from 2-5pm every Saturday and Sunday in October. The workshops are free. Please bring your own camera and laptop if you have them. RSVP to Ryan Hodson, or Jay Dedman if you plan to take a workshop or have any questions. Jay told me that he sees the Node as a social space as well as a workshop space, so come on by and join the party, even if you aren’t taking one of the workshops. Here’s a map.
