To Take a Break
Taking a break. It’s a cliche term most often used when relationships go sour, and people want to move on guilt free. I have discovered that it can also be used to describe what happens when life gets in the way. I’ve been trying to think of something to write for WATM for a while now, as I have been extremely remiss in my relationship with such an awesome body of work. I could write about the new vlogs that I’m discovering, or maybe the old vlogs that I’m rediscovering. While I enjoy doing that, I feel like I need a different approach right now. This is why I have chosen to write about what it has been like for me to all but disappear from the world of vlogging for several months and then return to find that things have been moving moving moving along without me (imagine that). It’s a unique experience, removing yourself from such an active, vibrant community that it growing in all different directions all the time. I wouldn’t recommend it unless absolutely necessary. I happened across my “break” with the vlogosphere by accident. The pace of life quickened in many ways, and, slowly, vlogging took a backseat. I travelled and worked, fostered personal relationships, and after a month or so I realized I hadn’t opened my FireANT in quite some time. I found myself wondering if people were slowly removing my feed from their own aggregators. Then the second and third month went by. I tried to break back in one or two times, but it just didn’t happen. The relationships I had formed through vlogging had slunk into the corners of Blogger and Wordpress and Typepad, only to be rekindled with the utmost of care and attention.

WATM Challenge 2: Parts of Things
For this challenge you can include nothing whole. You may only shoot video showing parts of things. Everything must only be shown in part. Nothing may be shown in its entirety. Make your video without regard to any other criteria, upload it, and post a link to it in all its glory in the comments. Live the dream and take the challenge. See things for not their whole and bask in unresolved incompleteness.

WATM Challenge 1 Recap
Wow, I knew this was going to be good. I knew it was important to have some sort of limit so that folks would be free to make the video they needed to make. I didn’t know that it would be this amazingly awesome. Here are the links that were posted in the comments to the WATM challenge 1. Watch them. Drool in envy of the raw creativity and make your own. Later today I’ll post another challenge, but don’t let that stop you from making your own video for the first challenge. There is no official deadline, just another challenge.

WATM Challenge 1: Half Second Clips
It’s Monday, and it’s time for the first WATM Challenge! Starting this week I will post a WATM Challege right here! It’s easy. All you do is make your video within the assigned criteria, upload it to the internet to a place like blip.tv, and then leave a note in the comments with the url of your video! It’s not important to be the best, it’s important to participate and learn and expand you video horizons. By taking a challenge every week we will grow and develop and be more empowered media-makers together!
WATM Challenge 1: Half Second Cuts - Make a video that cuts every half second. In other words, you can only use clips that are a half second long. You can make it as long as you want, but every half second the video must cut to another clip. No transitions allowed, just pure slashed footage every half second. Get it done before next Monday! Go for it!
Thanks to Markus Sandy who asked me at Vloggercon about the future of WATM, if he hadn’t of asked, I wouldn’t have answered!
Got ideas for future WATM challenges? Leave them in the comments.

Robert Scoble Quits Microsoft to Videoblog
Robert Scoble joined the legion of folks leaving their dayjob to videoblog fulltime to work at Podtech. Robert announced this at Vloggercon where I’d hazard a guess that 25% of the attendees put food on the table by making media on the internet. It’s exciting news to see that a high profile guy like Robert Scoble is following suit and leaving his job to videoblog. What’s holding you back?

Vloggercon Live! (even though I’m not there)

Kudos to the organizers of Vloggercon who put together a thoroughly impressive set of tools for those of us who could not make it to San Francisco for the conference. Here is the schedule, along with Quicktime streaming video and an IRC chat room for both of the main rooms at Vloggercon, which has made it so that we can see and hear what’s going on (with a slight delay) as well as interact with participants and non-participants around the world.
For video, I had good luck doing a click and hold on the “click to play” movie for each room, doing a “save as source” to my desktop and then opening that .mov with Quicktime. This way it was easy to resize and watch the video on my screen (without the rest of the HTML web page) while chatting in Java-based IRC in a browser. Alternatively, you can open Quicktime and go under File to “Open URL” and put in http://vloggercon.com/live/vlogger1.mov or vlogger2.mov for the two rooms.
I’m hoping some of the participants are posting videos of some of the highlights, such as Peter Van Dijk’s inspirational keynote opening, Jay Dedman’s call for vloggers to get beyond the initial stages of excitement about the technology and focus on content and the message, and the possibilities of vlogging to give a voice to people who otherwise may not have a voice in the “Political Vlogging and Social Change” panel. Blip.TV has set up a special place for all Vloggercon-related videos at http://vlogercon.blip.tv so go check them out!
Today (Sunday), Vloggercon will again stream live from 12 noon until 6 p.m. Pacific. I look forward to seeing friends and colleagues in the very clear stream!
