We All Speak Football, a place for vloggers during the World Cup

mindcaster football crazy

If you are going to be in Berlin from June 9 - July 9, then you must drop by the “weallspeakfootball” apartment. The apartment sponsored by Coca Cola is a blogger, podcasting, vlogger crashpad in the heart of Berlin, Germany. Prizes are gonna be given out, there’s drinks, food, fun and if you sign up for the application even a place to stay. What does it have to do with football (soccer for Americans)? Well, it is based around this year’s World Cup in Germany, however I’m not sure how much football talk there will be. If you want to join in on the fun along with the hosts, pro German blogger Lyssa from Lyssa’s Lounge, Anil from Mobuzztv.com and GabeB and I from XOLO.TV, just go to the website and fill out the application form. There are a few WK tickets to be had as well. :-) Kickoff!

SXSWclick!

Short format Video Fest.  If you are a videoblogger, you know what to do!  The only downside is that you can only enter by sending in $10 and a VHS or DVD tape… VHS?  Bonus points for comments with new phrases that contract to VHS… Lame example: Very High Security.

How Will The Future See Us?

James Boyle, William Neal Reynolds Professor of Law and Faculty Co-Director of the Center for the Study of the Public Domain at Duke Law School, sees several possibilites, but is not optimistic. Here is a short video snippet from the question and answer part of his keynote speech at the Beyond Broadcast 2006 conference last Friday and Saturday, May 12-13 at Harvard’s Berkman Center. I captured this from the live conference video stream using SnapX Pro.

Jay Dedman at Beyond Broadcast 2006 at Harvard's Berkman CenterHere’s a picture of Yahoo! Videoblogging Group co-founder Jay Dedman participating in one of the many discussions. You can find a great collection of photo’s on Flickr here.

United Vloggers of Europe

united vlogger

Alexx from iFranz.tv sent an e-mail to a number of vloggers asking to take part in his idea, “United Vlogger”. The idea was to have a number of vloggers in different countries read the news headlines at exactly the same time, Saturday 6 May @ 10:00. The videos would then be collected an edited and a week later the video would be posted together. Well It worked and it was real fun to do. The contributors were Cyrille, Alexx, Karina, Burkhard and myself (Gabe Mac). And as Karina says in the end, “Onto the next vlogger.” So it’s up to the rest to pick up the ball and keep going. Great Idea Alexx!

“Isms” Brouhaha in the Vlogosphere

There has been a spate of spirited sparring on the Yahoo Videoblogging Group and in video form about sexism, big media vs. grassroots media, agism, community, and all kinds of other hot-button issues. It started with a company looking for help finding a female host for a golf themed videoblog by posting on the Yahoo group. From that humble beginning a colossal exchange of posts both video and text ensued. KillerB got the video conversation going with this post, which inspired Ryan Hodson and Jay Dedman to respond with this video. Then things started getting reeeeeally weeeeeird with this post by Richard BF, which incorporated Brittany’s video into a video of himself with his mouth closed with black tape, silently (but very expressively) responding to her video. Things got a little tamer when Casey McKinnon posted her bronchitis tinged reflections on things. Then Bev Sykes chimed in with her very useful chronology of events along with her own take on things. Then things got strange again with this visually and sonically distorted remix of Ryan and Jay’s video by Shannon Noble. Then KillerB came back with a follow up video. Dig in. It’s a feast of isms!

From Daniel Liss
From Paul Knight
From Minnesota Stories.

Please note that there’s some profanity, sexual language, and stuff like that in some of these posts, so if that is not something you like, don’t follow the links.

Online Video: The Flood Gates

flood image
Grab your wi-fi enhanced 90 gig, no, terabyte hard drive life jacket, a virtual display to transmit directly to your retina, an inner tube and some non-perishables as the internet video flood crashes the gates! Sure, there are many commercial places to upload, host and share your personal videos, such as Blip.TV, Vimeo.com, YouTube.com, GoogleVideo, Veoh.com, and VMix.com. And the next tributary entering this stream is Big Media. This little river is about to burst over the banks! Warner Brothers teams up with BitTorrent to offer movie downloads? At last they have figured out: if you can’t beat ‘em, join ‘em. And charge admission.

Bravo is now set to launch “BrilliantButCancelled.com” for access to cancelled shows that had cult followings. Telemundo is partnering and merging with Yahoo. Pretty much every day, some “traditional media” company is sticking it’s toe in to test the waters, liking the temperature, and diving from the the airwaves into the river of online video. Soon, you’ll have access to pretty much any single piece of printed or recorded media ever made by anyone in the world, in your home. What are you willing to pay for it? Will people finally get tired of watching re-runs on their iPods and discover more interesting and personal vloggers? Will the splintering of audiences further disintegrate the prime time log into tiny particulate vibrations? Oh, and did I mention to grab a filter on the way? Row, row, row your boat, gently down the stream…

Post Videos to Your Video Blog in Flash

So you’ve seen the snazzy flash players that people use when they host their videos with various video services and you want to be able to do that yourself and host the flash files with your own hosting? Here’s how to do it in a few easy steps. If you happen to be on Windows you can do the same things, just use Riva’s encoder rather than ffmpegX used in this tutorial.

The only things you will need to create your video blog post (be it for a personal blog, political manifesto, or sharing your cool new technology hacks with the world) are a digital camera capable of capturing AVI’s, a Mac running OS 10.3.9 or higher, and a website or blog with FTP access to post your creation to. We are going to install a free open source tool called ffmpegX that will help us with converting the video into Flash’s FLV format. You can get ffmpegX here.

The first thing you will have to do is (more…)

Spatulatta: Cooking 4 Kids Online

olivia.jpg

Isabella and Olivia Gerasole are two very talented young ladies; not only do they know their way around the kitchen, but they now have an award-winning vlog teaching kids how to cook. NPR had a great story today about this magic 8 and 10-year-old duo. Aptly nicknamed “Ham” and “Cheese,” they each have great stage presence and articulate their recipes beautifully. They just won the James Beard award for culinary excellence, which was the first-ever award given by this foundation in the webcast category. My current favorite video is sunrise salad, but don’t miss the wide variety of videos they offer, including how to make bruschetta, how to properly wash your hands, and how to make an oragami Hawaiian shirt. In addition to the vlog, they offer a printable version of each one of their recipes. They don’t have an RSS feed, but they do offer to send you an email when they post. Go watch them and then try out their recipes!

NBA Videoblog

The National Basketball Association playoffs are in full swing. There is always lots of coverage everywhere, and the NBA has started a videoblog to provide even more coverage. So, in case you can’t get enough of the NBA Playoffs, or if you don’t live in the USA and want to know what’s going on, check out the videoblog of the NBA. It will keep you up to date.

Of course, you’ve got to sign up for it, and I haven’t been able to find RSS feeds, so maybe it’s just Internet video. Either way, it will help you know what’s going on with the NBA.
