Adbusters: TV Turnoff and Media Empowerment

adbustersWhat do Vlogs and Adbusters have in common? TV turnoff and media empowerment. For the last fifteen years, Adbusters has championed “TV Turnoff Week“. It is based on the philosophy that “fewer and fewer people control the media that shapes our worldview. And nowhere does this play out worse than on our televisions, where the corporate agenda reigns supreme. With TV Turnoff and the Media Carta movement, we’re fighting back – for the right of all citizens to access society’s most powerful forms of communication.” This year’s TV Turnoff Week will happen April 24-30, so start preparing now! Perhaps next year’s Videoblogging Week can coincide with TV turnoff week? How can the Vlogging community participate and spread the word about TV Turnoff Week? There are posters and info on the Adbusters.org website, and an opportunity for dialog in the discussion under this post.

Also noteworthy: Adbusters is offering a new Media Empowerment Kit for educators: “a collection of 45 modular lessons and activities designed to help students jump over the great divide between passive consumption and the empowered production of meaning. Now we’re working on ways to get this groundbreaking media literacy tool into the hands of as many teachers as possible. If you are a teacher or student who would like to see the kit being used at your school, we’d like to talk to you. Contact Laura at media-pr@adbusters.org for info about special bulk rates and more.”

I got rid of my TV about a year ago. I just wasn’t watching it! Of course I spend hours a day online checking stuff out.

The Media Empowerment Kit sounds really interesting.

I actually had a fight with my girlfriend about tv in our new apartment. After being TV free for months (hated paying for it anyway), we moved in together. She wanted to have TV in the apartment, I didn’t. So we eventually compromised, TV downstairs in the bedroom, but only VLOGS, Playstation and DVD’s upstairs in the living room with the Dolby Surround and big screen. What we do for love eh? :-)

I like the idea of coinciding vlog week with TV turnoff week. A lot. I’m in.

After not having a TV for a few years, I broke down and bought one from Goodwill. The reason? Not because I just had to see Seinfeld, but because my laptop had too many viruses and other junk on it and I couldn’t watch a movie without something freaky happening.
