The Secrets of Videoblogging
It starts shipping today! The Secrets of Videoblogging by Michael Verdi and Ryanne Hodson. Don’t you want one? Order yours!
Michael Verdi and Ryanne Hodson run Freevlog, the popular website where you can learn the basics of videoblogging for free. Their book goes into more depth, explaining in detail what is happening with all the technology, offering alternatives for different systems, and best of all, giving many, many examples of the kinds of things you can do with your videoblog. I think they jammed as many mentions of early 2006 videobloggers in there as they could. I’ve only seen snips of the books so far — my copy will hopefully arrive in the mail this week. I’ll post a longer review once I’ve had a chance to read more of it.
UPDATE: Well, Amazon predicted they would start shipping last week, but actually they started shipping yesterday, May 3rd. So look for the UPS truck if you’ve ordered one, and look for reviews popping up in the next several days as they get distributed.

15 Second Clip Competition
![]()
The Tribeca Film Festival, in association with American Express, is launching the 15 Second Clip Competition. This is something that I’m sure any vlogger reading this blog can win. What is it? You submit your 15 second clip to their site which illustrates a number of themes from:
What’s your perfect day?
What’s your perfect moment?
And more listed on the website.
The films will be judged by Martin Scorsese and M. Night Shyamalan, and the winner can win up to $15,000. There are of course some guidelines as far as nudity, language etc. (Lame and corporate rules that are always associated with these sorts of contests.) As far as the entry process:
Clips may not be larger than 9MB and must be a dimension of 320 x 240 pixels. You must complete the registration process and upload your video no later than 11:59P.M. (ET) on 4/26/06 to qualify for the Competition. You may submit more than one video in accordance with the entry process, but you cannot submit the same video more than once.
Also realize that the clips become owned by American Express and other rights that are released by entering the contest. READ THE GUIDELINES FIRST! Best of luck to all who enter.
Website for entry into the contest.

New Collaborative Vlog: Digital Transitions
Here is a brief selection of interview clips from the UC Santa Barbara Forum on Digital Transitions. What do vloggers like Jay Dedman and Ryanne Hodson do the day after Videoblogging Week 2006? They join JD Lasica and others to record dozens of interviews with leaders from both academia and business about transitions and challanges for online communites.
Some of the people interviewed include Howard Reingold, Mena Trott, danah boyd, John Sealy Brown and many other interesting folks on the cutting edge of online communities.

Veoh raises 12.5 million. What is on the horizon?

We’ve all been reading about the VEOH scandal both here on WATM and in the Yahoo Videoblogger group. However today I read that VEOH has recieved another round of financing of $12.5 million. They received this funding from none other than Michael Eisner, former chairman and CEO of The Walt Disney Company, Todd Dagres, managing partner of Spark Capital, and Time Warner. This is very interesting that these specific players are interestred in VEOH. My mind starts to wander as to why VEOH? It is interesting that the scandal of VEOH re-encoding the vloggers’ feeds and videos may have something to do with that. Here’s what I think.
Many media companies are looking as to how to add delivery of content through the internet as a new form of distribution. However the only real place to be able to distribute thier content on a pay per download basis is by using the iTunes Music Store. Now Apple has been very strict in setting the price for these downloads to a fixed price (and giving very little revenue back to the content holders from what I heard from an independent music label owner). This is not what the big movie studios want. These companies want to charge more money for thier films or TV shows than the iTunes $2, and recieve a higher revenue share from that service than Apple is allowing. Where am I basing this on? Have a look at this article talking about how Universal Pictures, among other studios, want to allow people to download the films at the same time as the DVD release, at a price of up to $30 for a download. Apple would not allow this. So they are looking for alternatives.
In steps VEOH. An aggregator which could be bought and add DRM and other functionality to allow this. Why re-encode those vlogs? Possibly to start making way for the VEOH DRM integration? Or just build up the library to rise up investment price? Who knows? All I say is don’t be surprised to see a link to download Spiderman 3 for $30 posted right next to your favorite video bloggers feed in VEOH.
That’s my €2 for free.

Making your feed Internet TV ready
I found this really interesting link on how to change your RSS feed to make it ready for something called Internet TV. I’m not sure if that’s IPTV, or if it’s whatever Yahoo and Google are cooking up. In any case Charles writes this excellent “How-TO” for both vloggers and developers to start converting those enclosure feeds for TV. So Josh, Daniel, Veoh, Blip and others, have a look at the section for developers.

Adbusters: TV Turnoff and Media Empowerment
What do Vlogs and Adbusters have in common? TV turnoff and media empowerment. For the last fifteen years, Adbusters has championed “TV Turnoff Week“. It is based on the philosophy that “fewer and fewer people control the media that shapes our worldview. And nowhere does this play out worse than on our televisions, where the corporate agenda reigns supreme. With TV Turnoff and the Media Carta movement, we’re fighting back – for the right of all citizens to access society’s most powerful forms of communication.” This year’s TV Turnoff Week will happen April 24-30, so start preparing now! Perhaps next year’s Videoblogging Week can coincide with TV turnoff week? How can the Vlogging community participate and spread the word about TV Turnoff Week? There are posters and info on the Adbusters.org website, and an opportunity for dialog in the discussion under this post.
Also noteworthy: Adbusters is offering a new Media Empowerment Kit for educators: “a collection of 45 modular lessons and activities designed to help students jump over the great divide between passive consumption and the empowered production of meaning. Now we’re working on ways to get this groundbreaking media literacy tool into the hands of as many teachers as possible. If you are a teacher or student who would like to see the kit being used at your school, we’d like to talk to you. Contact Laura at media-pr@adbusters.org for info about special bulk rates and more.”

It’s Emmy Time for Jerry

A big congratulations is in order for the creators of It’s Jerry Time Orrin and Jerry Zucker who have been nominated for an Emmy Award for original entertainment programming created specifically for non-traditional viewing platforms, including computers, mobile phones, iPods, PDAs and similar devices. (note: the name of this award is a shoe-in for worst named award)
The awards take place on April 22 and we sure hope that the brothers will not be too busy afterwards, no matter what the outcome, fighting off Hollywood execs to give us our monthly dose of Jerry’s mis-adventures.

Go Watch This
Please take a moment to go watch this:
This is what I believe videoblogging is about. The chance for stories
made by people who are usually never given a chance to speak for
themselves. A chance for real cultural dialogue and understanding.
Screw the old-school / hollywood ideas of “good”. Let something else
shine as good for different reasons.
Check out Irene’s video, and post comments to her vlog!
