Ever since I did a presentation at the meet the vloggers gathering in SoHo this summer, people have kept asking what software I use to do my vlogs. I’ve been using Wirecast from Vara Software. It’s rather pricey, but it allows for simple changes of precomposed shots with videos, titles, and 2 cameras. It saves the videos right to the desired QuickTime format, or even sets up a video stream. Wirecast is available for the Mac and Windows platforms.
Vara Software has released a lighter version called VideoCue for Mac platform. It is really great as it allows for simple drag and drop of videos, pictures and live camera into a storyboard cue. It also has direct support for adding it to your blog. There is a free trial download to get your feet wet and to see if it is something for you.

I tried out Visual Communicator. I think these can be terrific for people who can’t or don’t want to get too much into the technical side. Though, for me, I think no quicker than putting everything together in Vegas Video.

‘Kinda pricey?’ $449 is borderline rape for no more than Wirecast does. Why would I spend that much money when I can spend about the same money for full Adobe Premier (student price)? Granted I have to pay a little more for camera, (any vhs will do) but aside from that I can actually produce real video. Wirecast is nothing more than web-enhanced MS Powerpoint. Even Camtasia Studio or Microsofts built in video editor is more functional. Havn’t tried Visual Communicator or the VideoCue yet, but from what I can tell, Varasoft are twice the coorporate pirates MS is. What sucks even more, is that the trial portion of the software embeds their stupid un-editable logo and audio. So you cant actually ‘Try it out’ to see what it is like, without seeing and hearing their message over, and over and over. My opinion, Don’t Download This. Its a waste of time, and money.

“Wirecast is nothing more than web-enhanced MS Powerpoint”
You’ve clearly not used the software. This is a video switcher, which normally costs $5k, minimum, for a hardware solution.
The fact that this software can even do what it does is amazing.
Check your facts before spewing.
