Microsoft announced today that anyone can download Flip 4 Mac for free. The program allows Mac users to play .wmv and .wma files in the quicktime player. The videos are way more managable this way, making scrubbing through the video as easy as any other quicktime file. If you install this program on your Mac, all the video blogs that are distributed in .wmv form will play perfectly. No more waiting for the video to start, and no more usless controls. The pro version of the software (which you still have to pay for) allows users to import and export wmv files in any editing program. This announcement will help balance the windows video-format problems that have been plagueing Mac users since day one.

Update: There is a compatibility issue with QuickTime v 7.0.4. Please download Flip4Mac WMV v2.0.1 here. This version resolves the compatibility issue with QuickTime v7.0

I hear you on the plagueing. Until recently I thought I was bound to .wmv becuase I have a PC. Now I’ve entered the era of 3ivx, but mac users can enjoy my older vlogs as well. My audience has just quadrupled!

That’s hot! One of the things I can’t stand about WMV itself is not being able to see how long the video lasts or scrub through it— lack of information and controls. This will make WMV tolerable, at last. Thanks, Josh!
