Richard, aka Madge Weinstein, joined last Saturday’s Videoblogging Video Conference and challanged vloggers for longer video content. Hopefully this post will help a little. Click on the pic to view seven and a half minutes of this content discusion between several famous videobloggers. Madge says she had a great time and talked about the video conference in her own Yeast Radio podcast. Later, Richard, Michael Verdi, Schlomo. Paul and Rachel Knight, Podcaster Harold and others got into a conversation on the topic of criticism which can be found archived here (caution: mature language). The meeting chat log can be found here. Check out the wiki for links to future videoblogging video conferences and recordings of previous conference recordings.

Videoblogging content works best when it’s short. When Richard is on the Stairmaster he needs good tv content - because tv works better when it’s longer.
Verdi says it depends on who is watching. I say it’s about how they’re watching.
After having worked at a community television station I oncur with Verdi. People don’t have the surplus to make 30-60 minute programs. The station where I was at had big problems getting submissions. Videoblogging is really great for the common man because the short content that he can produce works really well on a videoblog.
Saying videoblogs need longer content is like saying more blogposts should be article length. As with videoblogs, text blogs gain much of their value *because* they’re short. They fit better into the blog reading situation that way. Obviously articles or 30-minute programs will never go away, but they don’t tend to work well in blog reading situations. Articles will be read as articles, not as blogs, 30-minute videos will be read as tv programs (on the Stairmasters), not as blog posts.

Walk before you run.
Longer content is the last thing that vlogging needs right now. Most vloggers have not yet figured out how to make short content good much less longer format work. We all have limited time for viewing vlogs and I would much rather spend 1/2 hour watching ten 3 min. posts than one 30min post. And agreed, the time required to make a half hour of good content would take a crazy amount of time.
Expectations rise exponentially with increasing length.

Short is long if we must endure it. A curve can be established easy enough, by what the gentleman said about his long vs his short. However, I could have made your video in less time and gotten far more content, because quite frankly, it was more about opinion than about length of video.
Don’t waste our time with opinion, give us the stats. Do longer video of quality content get viewed more? If so, make more! Yes, there is a place for the condensed version and for those brave enough to risk longer and so far it’s free.
