JD Lasica’s Real People Network

jd

JD Lasica is a cool guy with his hand on the pulse of grassroots media. I just discovered his real people network, which is where he posts his interviews with movers and shakers in the media world. I like the way he frames his subjects and that his focus is to be “hollywood-free.”

Surveillance… The New Video Blog?

Are you being watched? How does surveillance effect our daily life? Why can’t we have quick access to media being made about us?

There is a really interesting radio program on Democracy Now about the infiltration of the bike group critical mass by the New York Police who have been going undercover and videotaping the demonstrations and in some cases, getting themselves arrested to appear to be with the group. This was front page news in the NYT two days ago as well.

When will critical mass get a video-blog to show the world their story first hand? They’ve got lots of video that needs to get out documenting their demonstrations.

On the other side of the fence, where are the police surveillance video blogs? If there is lots of video surveillance going on, wouldn’t it be great for it to show up on a video blog? We as the public should be seeing what’s being seen by the police.

Transparency in video surveillance would be a good thing for both the police and the folks at critical mass.

Madge Weinstein Stirs Up The Videoblogging Video Conference

Richard, aka Madge Weinstein, joined last Saturday’s Videoblogging Video Conference and challanged vloggers for longer video content. Hopefully this post will help a little. Click on the pic to view seven and a half minutes of this content discusion between several famous videobloggers. Madge says she had a great time and talked about the video conference in her own Yeast Radio podcast. Later, Richard, Michael Verdi, Schlomo. Paul and Rachel Knight, Podcaster Harold and others got into a conversation on the topic of criticism which can be found archived here (caution: mature language). The meeting chat log can be found here. Check out the wiki for links to future videoblogging video conferences and recordings of previous conference recordings.

2006 = Vlog

Evan Rice, recorded in a vlog post, by his 5 yr old brother Aidan, with his first video camera
MercuryNews.com | 12/25/2005 | Top 10 tech trends for 2006:

“Video comes to blogs to begat vlogs. For anybody who’s getting tired of reading all those wordy blogs (short for Weblogs) posted on the Internet on every conceivable niche topic, video comes to the rescue. If a picture is worth a thousand words, video might be worth even more. Now anyone can subscribe to vlogs and have the latest installments automatically delivered to the computer desktop (and transferred to a portable player, such as the video iPod).”

Pictured above:

The future is now.

Mexico City: Luz. Cámara. Enter.

Rocketboomers Andrew Baron and Amanda Congdon were in Mexico City last week to promote videoblogging.

Andrew explains:

“Amanda I were invited to Mexico City last week to help launch a videoblogging contest for the spanish speaking part of the word, on behalf of Intel.

“Out of everything I have ever been involved with so far, this is probably the biggest, most exciting thing. I was a little nervous at first about the idea of pairing a “contest” with “videoblogging” but the main point to to bring awareness to the whole Spanish speaking world about what is going on with this movement we are all involved in.

Machinima: Video Game Movies Get Political

france, like it or leave it

A new means of movie making has arrived. Capturing video games as video has resulted in the emergence of “machinima.” Machinima is a style of movie making that involves capturing the action in a video game as a movie.

Lionhead Studios have made themselves the nexus of machinima movie afficionados by releasing “The Movies” which is software that takes videogame movie making to a hollywood level.

Can video game movies be a media outlet for political expression? After watching The French Democracy, a political machinima which is about the recent french riots, I can say that the tools of grassroots media have expanded to include these video game movies. Machinima video makers have arrived on the political platform in France. When will Americans take up this new media making technique? Which political party will hire a team of video blog/machinima experts to propogate the values of freedom, liberty, and democracy that our president has recently stripped from US citizens? Who will make the the machinima movie about the rise of the police state in the US that George Bush went public with this week?

Rushkoff on Videoblogging

Watch the video

I recently had the pleasure of speaking with bestselling writer Douglas Rushkoff about his latest projects “Get Back in the Box,” and “Testament.” At the end of our interview, I couldn’t help asking him for his take on videoblogging.

Big thanks to Matthew Culliford for doing the videography.
