Gabe Vlogs and Dutch Police Get Pissed
Gabe and his friend Pavle got stopped by the police in Amsterdam and promtly video-blogged the unpleasant experience of being illegally stopped and frisked.
I love Gabe for handling the situation with calmness and vlogger passion, “What’s wrong? I can’t film my friend… I can film myself.”
I always carry my camera and now, thanks to Gabe, I’ll be prepared to use that line. Getting used to pointing a camera at yourself in public has its perks.
Update: This got written up in the press and we got lots of comment nastygrams in the comments of this post that used a lot of foul language, but basically said, “If you are American and don’t like being searched, then go home.” Go to Gabe’s blog to follow the story. Because young people read our website, no comments that use foul language will be published here.

Re-Vlogging in Mefeedia
Have you seen Mefeedia lately? There is some cool stuff going on over there.
Peter Van Dijck is a really cool user interface architect and he’s working like a busy bee on Mefeedia. Next week he’s going to be coming out with a “Vlog This” feature which I’m really looking forward to. It’s going to make it easy for me to post about cool video posts that I find!
Here is how I intend to use it. I’ll search the tags for “remixoff2005″ or “remix” and I’ll find all sorts of cool remixes. Then I’ll click the “Vlog This” button. Mefeedia is going to automatically snag a bunch of pics out of the video for me to use as a thumbnail and so I’ll choose a little pic from the choices given. Then I’ll slap the code that mefeedia spits out and slap it into a WATM post and share the vlog treasure with the world. It’s kinda like that “Blog This” button in Flickr, except that it is way cooler!
With this re-vlogging tool, Mefeedia is making it easier for vloggers to send the vlink vlove around the vlogosphere!
I wouldn’t put it past Peter to add a snazzy re-vlogged feed so that I can subscribe to a feed of all the videos that people have revlogged!
Update: Peter says that he just made it even easier so that you don’t even need to cut and paste the code, you can have mefeedia do the job for you!

Yahoo for the Yahoo! Group
Positive growth is the cornerstone to any good business model (you like when I reference previous WATM articles, don’t you?). Many readers of this site are most likely members of the Yahoo! Videoblogging Group. It is a staple of our relatively small community. However, when I use the term small it is simply as a comparative descriptor utilized to frame size versus the global population. Since it’s inception in May of 2004, the v-blogging group has seen new members increase leaps and bounds. I thought I would take a minute to put things in perspective. As of today, there are 1610 registered users of the group. According to Michael Verdi, rough estimates of growth are as follows: late November - approximately 125 members, May 31, 2005 (one year vlogiversary) - around 550. If I was a math person, I’d give a percentage of growth over the last 18 months. Because I’m not a math person, I’ll just say holy cow! Thats a lot of new vlogs. If we keep going at this rate, there’s no telling how big the group could get. Here’s to the new vloggers - always moving us forward, always keeping things fresh, and always inspiring more positive growth. Keep up the good work.

6 Podcasting Business Models

While at the at The Portable Media Expo & Podcasting Conference, JD Lasica at New Media Musing and writer of Darknet interviewed Jason Calacanis, founder of Weblogs Inc (and sold it to AOL for $25 million) about the different business models of Podcasting.
It is great that Podacsters have been wrestling with these matters for a while, becuase vloggers can learn a lot from them. All a vlogger needs to is insert the Word “Vlogging” everytime they hear the word “Podcasting” in tis interview to get some interesting and opinonated insight into what Jason believes are the possible opportunties and non-starters business models.
Best 6 minutes I have watched in a long time. Here is a link to the video since New Media Musings does not allow for linking directly to the post

Internet Archive Founder Interview

If you are curious about Brewster Kahle who is the man behind the Internet Archive that many vloggers use to host their videos then this interview from NerdTV is worth watching/listening/reading. I love the fact that Robert Cringely makes everything available as video, mp3 as well as transcripts so I have been able to listen to the interview on my Ipod and then go back to the transcript for any real intersting nuggets I want to remember later on. Case in point, I loved his comment about what might become of the Internet “If we ended up building another television out of this, what a shame.”

Chasing Windmills

Chasing Windmills is a fictional episodic vlog that’s about a couple dealing with the day to day issues of being a couple. Putting aside the fact that I am having great difficulty liking these characters (I even wonder how they put up with each other), the production qualities are great and this vlog often dives into some pretty interesting ideas.
New episodes also seem to appear on an almost daily basis.
Worth a look and they don’t get near the number of comments they deserve.

Avid Free DV

Looking to move beyond Window’s Movie Maker? Try Avid Free DV which is Avid’s answer to Apple’s iMovie. Although it is lacking in some features that you would expect from other (ie pay) editors (2 Track Max. No real-time Out without rendering. Quicktime only.) it is a good way to learn the Avid interface if you hope to later move up to one of their full featured programs.
Comes in both Mac and Window version

Fragmentation: News Stations Hiring “Video Journalists” to Compete
The pieces of big media pie are getting smaller. A story posted on Lost Remote today contains further evidence of the fragmentation of mainstream media and news sources. The story links to two articles, one in TV Week and one in the Times Union, an Albany, New York newspaper. The TV Week article mentions a couple Young Broadcasting news stations that have begun hiring “video journalists” and bloggers, and have outfitted their crews with smaller portable cameras to gather news footage. They are feeling the need to compete with new technologies that allow people to bypass TV news in favor of downloading video off the net and viewing it on portable players. The stations don’t seem to put the video and the blogging together into one tasty treat, but are focused on blogging text and broadcasting the video, but videoblogging could be right around the corner for them. The Times Union article gives direct evidence that the media pie is being carved into smaller pieces, as some news stations around the country have already shut down.

More Re-Mix’s
Kity-Kity, our most recent Vlogger of the Week, has another videoblog re-mix posted. In this video, she sees vloggers everywhere she goes. What’s that sign ahead? Is it Verdi?
Also, Juan Carlos Gonzales, a.k.a. Mr. Multiple2, has a vlog re-mix posted on his “This Side of the Cave” site that may become another classic along the lines of our very own Josh Leo’s classic “We Are The Media”. It poses the big question of “why vlog”, while sampling from the explosion of online videoblog content.
Way to re-mix it up! Here’s a link to the “NOW REMIX!” video from mrmultiple2, just in case you are not already subscribed to his feed.
