Video search is a baby

John Tobin at El Oriental de Cuba
Scott Kirsner writes in today’s Boston Globe about searching for video on the web, Big picture still hazy in video search:

“Boston City Councilor John Tobin is one of the very few elected officials who publish a video blog on the Web. Every so often, he posts a short video dispatch from his district. Last month, he stood in front of El Oriental de Cuba, a great Cuban restaurant in Jamaica Plain that had been destroyed by a firebomb, talking about the support he and others were coordinating for the restaurant’s owners and the residents who had lived upstairs.

But try to find Tobin’s video blog using one of the major video search engines — from Google, Lycos, Singingfish, or Blinkx.tv — and you’ll come up empty. Search for the name of the restaurant, and you still get nada. Only Yahoo’s video search manages to track down the clip.

Video search is still in its infancy.”

Note:
Kirsner interviewed me for this story and I created and maintain Councillor Tobin’s blog.

Citizen Journalists Go Mainstream

NECN Video
Broadcasting & Cable: Why Everybody Is a Reporter:

“A handful of TV-news companies are cultivating relationships with contributors. Regional cable news channel New England Cable News (NECN) asks viewers to contribute local stories, such as promising-athlete profiles or traffic-snarl reports. “Viewers are always saying the stories that we do don’t reflect their lives,” says Steve Safran, director of digital media. “OK, so what’s going on in your life? Tell us. We can’t be everywhere at once, but you can.” NECN carefully distinguishes the amateur video from that of its own journalists, opting to call the sources “citizen newsgatherers.””

It’s a small world after all

Lisa Mcleod
Lisa Earle McLeod writes With Internet, it’s a small world after all in the Gwinnett Daily Post:

“For better or for worse, we’re at the tipping point of a radical societal change. The world is getting smaller, and we’re getting more connected to each other every day.

I personally think it’s a good thing. It’s going to be pretty hard to hate a guy half a world away when his video blog shows how much he loves his kids.”

Tips and Tricks

On-board mics suck - People will actually put up with bad images but nothing turns people off quicker than bad sound and that is why, oddly enough, I am including this on a list of ways to get a better quality image. The most common issue with them is that they tend to pick up the sound of your camera’s internal workings. Obviously, it is more cumbersome to carry a mic and not as easy to just whip your camera out, but it your vlog relies on capturing good audio (other than when you speak directly to your camera) you may want to consider graduating to a better a mic.

Videoblogging Video Conference: Content

jensimmons2

Summary of the Videoblogging Video Conference
Tuesday August 16 5pm PDT

Another videoblogger virtual meetup was held online this evening.  There were 35 particpants.  Motivated by a video posted by Jay and Ryanne and a post by Clint Sharp, the proposed topic for the evening was "content"

Initially, the discussion started out around the idea of creating collaborative pieces within and outside the conference room. It then moved into the topic of critiques and constructive criticism and, from there, into a discussion of new types of content and new content creators.

Above, Jen Simmons asks "What’s possible in videoblogging?…What are people getting excited about?"
