Podcast and Videoblog Roadshow

Eric Rice
The San Francisco Podcast and Videoblog Roadshow will be happening at The House of Shields on Saturday, August 6, 2005.

“Call every blogger, podcaster, and videoblogger you know. Bring a newbie. Bring a camera. Bring a newbie. And all you journalists out there? Don’t be shy. Come on out and let’s show the rest of the world why SF is one of the hardcore hot spots for making media.”

Skateboarding Dog Videos

skating dogI know its not a video blog… but it is still an amazing video that would be a crime to miss. This isn’t just any pet trick, I grew up skating, so seeing this dog skateboard on video is pretty impressive.

Videobloggers doing live video without blogs

FlashMeeting
Markus Sandy has annotated this weekend’s Videoblogging Video Conference.

We’ve been having these live video conferences twice weekly for a while now.

Take a look to see what we’re discussing, and the cool FlashMeeting technology that we use to both see and hear each other live.

Here’s a link for you to join tonight’s meeting at 8:00 EDT.

You don’t even need a camera and microphone to participate, there’s also text chat. You’ll still be able to watch and hear everyone else.

Here is the wiki where all archives links are kept.

Vlogs could challenge MTV or CNBC

Rocketboom_Logo
Matthew Schifrin, Editor of Forbes, writes this about their Summer 2005 edition of Forbes.com Best of the web in the article, Blog Power:

“In reviewing the entries for this guide, I was especially struck by the growing movement of video bloggers, or ‘vloggers’, online. More and more people with digital video cameras are easily creating mini-documentaries, newscasts, parodies and ‘television-like’ reality series on their own. One New York City vlog, Rocketboom, reports the ‘news’ every morning at 9 a.m. for three minutes in an irreverent, but endearing style. It has formed alliances with other vloggers so that it effectively has correspondents in Minneapolis, Boston, LA and Switzerland.

Elsewhere online, there are video directories forming so that one day soon you will be able to click onto a ‘guide’ and watch whatever you want, whenever you want. Sound like Tivo? So just as 500-channel cable television disrupted the big powerful networks, thousands of vlogs could one day challenge now-thriving cable channels like MTV or CNBC.”

Yeah… Blog Power.

FireANT Syncs with Your PSP

The Folks at FireANT have posted a neat little tutorial showing how PC users with FireANT can upload video blogs to their PSP in just a few simple steps. I imagine that this would be great way to make your train ride to work go a little faster, as well as a great way to always have a nice selection of video blogs in your pocket to help evangelize to people who may not be familiar with the medium. The coolest feature is that you can set up certain feeds to automatically transcode to PSP format and then quickly sync up so you can take your favorite vlogs with you on the go in the blink of an eye.

European Vloggers Unite!

Raymond Kristiansen has officially announced “Vlog Europe!” It is a 3 day meetup of video bloggers from across the pond (though anyone from any continent is welcome) The dates are set for a get-together on September 16-18 in Amsterdam, Netherlands, and from the looks of things, this is going to be a major event! There are plenty of European Vloggers out there, contributing a variety of different styles, often very different than what is being produced here in America.

There is a blog that functions as the main hub for all planning activity as well as a newly created Yahoo Group. Raymond is trying to set up a live videofeed from the meetup using flashmeeting (which is used for all vlogger video conferences) Keep your eyes open for more details concerning Vlog Europe, and if you can afford the flight, train ticket, or gas, Get your butt and videocamera on over to Amsterdam mid-September!

Forbes Reviews Video Blogs in “Best of the Web”

Forbes did their research, and finally got some stuff right. They realize that vlogs aren’t TV, and that they aren’t trying to be TV! The article provides a good number of reviews of video blogs, and video blogging resources.

They do a pretty good job of giving a look into the different kinds of vlogs out there, and also some of the sites that have sprung up out of the movement. Chuck Olsen (who seems to be the main authority these days when it comes to finding and commenting on recent video blogging press) has this to say about the review of his video blog:

Pretty cool so far. What’s funny is the BEST/WORST reviews. For
example mine:

BEST: Well organized and some videos are offered in both Quicktime
and Flash.

WORST: Videos only; no other content or links on the site.

Yeah, pretty terrible that a videoblog only has videos!

Even though the article has some points to nitpick about, it does a great job of introducing the world to our favorite medium of expression. I hope that more news sources do their research like Forbes obviously has, that way there will be a lot more happy vloggers, and a lot less mis-informed readers!

New York Times Covers Video Blogging

The New York Times ran an article today about our most beloved topic, video blogging. Of course, like most “mainstream” press, they seem to miss the point. Video blogs are not television, they are not trying to be television. Chuck Olsen gives The best analysis of the article on his weblog.

Either way you look at it, I think the attention given to video blogging (be it negative, positive or just innacurate) may lead others to discover this new medium and motivate them to join the Vlogosphere, so that is always a plus.

Here are scans of the paper version of the article (page1, page 2). It took up about 1/3 of the front page of the “Arts” section (almost as big as the picture of Lance Amstrong on the Sports front page. I guess that means that video blogging is becoming a little bit bigger!
